Large Groups' Tax Departments: Factors That Influence Tax Management report released today by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs is founded on market intelligence provide by FDS's business research team.
The report explores the tax management of large companies incorporated in the UK, understanding their position and motivations regarding corporation tax.
FDS conducted an extensive programme of depth interviews with Tax Managers and Financial Directors of FTSE or equivalent companies to explore the potentially sensitive subject of corporate tax planning.
As expected we encountered many challenges during the project as some large corporates were naturally wary of research focused on tax planning. We overcame these challenges by employing extensive piloting and methodological testing. We used direct mail and senior level qualitative specialists to conduct the interviews.
Most encouraging was the positive word of mouth that spread throughout the corporate tax community during fieldwork. Those who had been interviewed by FDS imparted positive feedback to their peers, reassuring them this was not the 'game keeper' attempting to gain the upper hand in the tax game via the back door, instead meetings (interviews) were viewed as an opportunity to commence an open and frank dialogue with HMRC.
This research has helped build HMRC's knowledge bank on large businesses, delivering valuable insight, allowing them to engage more effectively with UK PLC's most valued customers.
"It definitely feeds into the knowledge base we are gathering….thank you again for a high quality research report."
